Homegrown ecommerce store, Flipkart leads against global giant Amazon in smartphone sales. According to reports, Flipkart has increased its lead in the highly competitive segment.
Flipkart snagged a 51% share of the online smartphone shipments for 2017 while Amazon India cornered a 33% share, observed the report made by Counterpoint Research.
However, when compared to 2016, both players gained more business. Flipkart and Amazon had a 44% and 31% market share respectively in 2016.
The report also noted that Amazon outperformed Flipkart in premium smartphone sales with a higher share.
“Amazon has a higher pie in the premium smartphone space with 63% of shipments in 2017 driven by sales of OnePlus and Apple, while Flipkart contributed about 31% to premium smartphone shipments,” said Counterpoint Research. .
As the global smartphone business showed a sluggish pace last year, both the companies relied on budget smartphone segment to acquire business in India.
This strategy worked well as they rolled out feature-rich,budget smartphones from brands like Redmi, Huawei, Honor etc. The smartphones under the budget segment were well-received in the market.
Indian online smartphone shipments grew 23% last year and contributed to more than one third of the total smartphones sales in 2017.
The growth in smartphone was mainly due to the launch of exclusive smartphones. According to reports, there were 100 exclusive smartphone launches in 2017.
