Entrepreneur: Aanchal Mittal
Business Name: Brandless
Welcome to Entrepreneurs of India #startupstories episode 70
Aanchal Mittal believes fashion is permanent. She does not want to stay in vogue. From this idea emerged Brandless, her leather accessories business.
As an alumni of NIFT, Delhi, Aanchal was keen on deviating from the trodden paths in fashion industry. She is driven by a satirical ideology which is against conventional branding. Even the name Brandless speaks the philosophy of her business.
Brandless is a minimalistic approach towards designing. Without exaggerations, Aanchal makes her brand stand out from the rest in a unique way. You cannot expect to see the cozy, embellished designs here. At Brandless, each product is bespoke and handcrafted to fine detailing and luxury.
“Brandless as a brand is old school in its beliefs and does not promote fast fashion as a way of keeping pace with the constantly changing fashion trends,” says Aanchal.
We catch up with Aanchal as she fondly recollects her remarkable entrepreneurial journey and shares her plans for future.
1) How did you get your idea for this business?
Idea behind Brandless came from the obsession for brands instead of aesthetic of a product. The beauty for me was always in a the details and not in the face elements. Hence, the idea was to create a brand which appreciated the rawness and imperfections in natural beauty. When somene carries a brandless product it should compliemnt and speak of the person’s personality and not the brand only.
2) Why is “now” a good time for this idea to exist?
There could not be a better time to exist than now cause the market is more acceptable to new brands and are deviating from the brand names. They value the minimalism more than ever and are keen to experiment.
3) What was the reaction from your family when you first decided to become an entrepreneur?
I have been very lucky to have found my strength and support in my family. They have been my backbone throughout and specially my mom who has thrown me to take risks. She taught me to stand and walk everytime i fell.
4) What was your biggest mistake in business and what did you learn from it?
I wouldnt call it a mistake but a learning or experince I got everytime. It has been a journey with lot of ups and downs and each day teaches me something new.
5) What is your biggest obstacle in the next 12 months and how will you overcome it?
I dont believe in obstacles, we have lot of challenges for sure. But thats what makes it interesting to look forward to each day.
6) What habits contribute to your success?
I do not believe in burning bridges whatever might happen. I am very persistent and optimistic in my approach which i feel is the key to success. Also, treat your team as your family cause they make the roots of your brand.
7) If you had the opportunity to start this business again what would you do differently?
I wouldnt want to start all over again but yes I wish I was more aggressive with PR and Marketing or may be networking. But again this journey has taught me a lot and i have nothing to complain about.
8) What is your favourite inspirational quote?
Not really a quote but once I read “Trust the timing of your life.”
9) Where do you find inspiration?
My inspiration lies in everyday life. As a brand, I do not draw inspiration from anything tangible instead it is from our daily routine and the problems we face in it. My aim is to solve those issues and make our life more ogranised and easy through design. Design is not just about beauty but a balance between functionality and aesthetics for me. That is what is different between art and design.
10) What is your favourite book?
Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri
11) What advice would you give to someone starting out?
Dont lose hope and take failures as learnings. Just be persistent and do not compare yourself to others.
Entrepreneurship is all about discovering what’s lacking in the market and fill that gap successfully. Aanchal took the advantage of people’s zest for a minimalistic approach towards brands.
She realized that they wanted to deviate the from exhausting brand culture and experiment with new things. That’s what persuaded her to launch Brandless.
Aanchal believes design is the balance between functionality and aesthetics. So, she puts her heart and soul into creating designs that make life more convenient.
She proves that sometimes you all need to do is to just apply your sensibilities to business. That’s the best way to solve a customer pain point!
