Entrepreneurs: Ajay & Yogmaya
Business name: A&Y Partners
Welcome to Entrepreneurs of India #startupstories episode 58
One is good, two is even better. Finding a great partner in business is luck, finding a great partner for life is fortune. But the most prosperous are those who find one person to fit into both these roles with perfection.
A & Y Partners in Bangalore are proving this right every day of their lives. It might come as a surprise to most as the glamorous duo introduce themselves as lawyers. The couple has brought with them a wave of change to the most common and misleading notions when it comes to thinking about the judicial system.
The young law professionals Yogmaya and Ajay have opened up a multi service law firm ensuring a one stop solution for all your legal needs. Though they’ve been in practice for a long time A & Y Partners was established in 2016.
The team consists of young & energetic lawyers who believe in alternative thinking and provide every client with an approachable environment. How did A&Y happen? Let’s unfold the story now!
1) How did you get your idea for this business?
The idea of opening an office was always in our minds, which was discussed right after we got married. We both knew that starting from scratch would be a lot of work but we also knew that it was something we were willing to risk together. In spite of there being a trend of nepotism in the legal industry, we are one of the youngest married lawyers in Bangalore to have co-founded a law firm.
2) Why is “now” a good time for this idea to exist?
Whether its now or in the future, it’s always a great idea to open your own law firm, with thoughts & values that you believe in.
Apart from representing big corporations, we at A&Y Partners also do pro bono work where we represent those who cannot afford legal fees like struggling farmers, etc. We once took up a case for a farmer who was in a bad state of affairs and after getting a favourable order, he was so happy that he gave us boxes full of butter since we refused to take his legal fees.
We feel satisfied at the end of the day that we could provide justice to different kinds of people.
3) What was the reaction from your family when you first decided to become an entrepreneur?
Both our families motivated us and were very supportive in our decision. Of course, its not easy to take a bold step, especially when both our parents were neither lawyers nor were we guided from anyone on how to run a law firm, however, we listened to our instincts and decided to go ahead.
4) What was your biggest mistake in business and what did you learn from it?
Well, mistakes are inevitable. I’m glad we make them so that we can learn from it.
5) What is your biggest obstacle in the next 12 months and how will you overcome it?
We can’t really predict the obstacles that may arise, however, we are willing to look at solving them together.
6) What habits contribute to your success?
Well, I know a lot of people say this, but we realized its harder to actually do it. So for us it would definitely be hard work & keeping a positive attitude.
7) If you had the opportunity to start this business again what would you do differently?
Definitely! We wouldn’t change a thing!
8) What is your favorite inspirational quote?
Hope and change are hard-fought things- Michelle Obama
9) Where do you find inspiration?
Someone close to us like both our parents, as well as, someone famous like the Obama’s. We also look at each other for inspiration.
10) What is your favourite book?
There are lots of favourite books but the one book which we are anticipating on reading is Michelle Obama’s new book “Becoming”.
11) What advice would you give to someone starting out?
We would say that as much as it’s exciting to start out, you may also face certain obstacles in your work or even around people. Always remember that if you believe in yourself and tell yourself not to quit, you will learn a lot!
An entrepreneur is born the moment you decide to do things on your own terms. Yogmaya and Ajay are first generation lawyers taking the plunge early in life. Indeed it has been a learning experience for them. It has also made the learning process better as they started off early making more space to learn.
They chose to face the adversities with courage and to keep going. A full service law firm is certainly a high maintenance venture bringing in challenges every day like whirlwinds, but what matters is the perseverance and passion.
What matters is how strong you are when put up against challenges. Yogmaya and Ajay are an inspiration to young law professionals and aspirants from around the world. Wishing the duo the best.
