Welcome to Entrepreneurs of India #startupstories episode 55
How far will you go for your passion? Runit Gupta, an entrepreneur from Raipur, could have easily remained in his well-established family business. Instead, he listened to his inner call and embarked on a journey to launch his own business in fashion designing and accessories sector, one of the most competitive domains in India.
To become an established fashion designer was not easy. Only those who had utmost creativity, fashion sensibility and a bit of luck struck gold in the business. But Runit worked his fingers to the bones to remain there. And his hard work paid off in an overwhelming way!
The menswear label focuses on crafts involved in designing a menswear collection with social, ethical and sustainable values. The accessories arm provides all the trendy accessories for men that add to their styling.
Runit rose like a Phoenix from all the criticisms and downfalls. But how? He shares his remarkable entrepreneurial journey.
1) How did you get your idea for this business?
The Passion for everyday styling in comfort, seeing the less options for menswear brought me the idea to start this journey.
2) Why is “now” a good time for this idea to exist?
This is a great time to execute this idea because even men deserve the experiments in descent styling. Certainly they get options in ethnic wear but the casuals remain the same in terms of style.
3) What was the reaction from your family when you first decided to become an entrepreneur?
The family never believed in the plan as we already have a “set” business and therefore they have been reluctant for me to struggle.
4) What was your biggest mistake in business and what did you learn from it?
The biggest mistake in business has been not pursuing a proper education of this industry, the practical and theoretical knowledge for which i have to use the internet much often.
5) What is your biggest obstacle in the next 12 months and how will you overcome it?
The biggest obstacle would be creating a working team that has same vision and would help me achieve my goals. Due to Lack of skilled artisans, I have to currently work 10 times more physically in a masterpiece.
In future when i can generate good business, I can influence more artisans and encourage them to work in the craft in order to sustain the living. I wish to help all through my work.
6) What habits contribute to your success?
The constant habit of reading and discovering new trends, progressive sampling & explorations of details and refining my knowledge, contribute to my success.
7) If you had the opportunity to start this business again what would you do differently?
I have chosen the best for myself. What could be better than making your passion your profession!
8) What is your favourite inspirational quote?
Try and Try, until you succeed. Nothing happens overnight.
9) Where do you find inspiration?
I get mostly inspired with the Indian crafts and skills to beautify a garment. Reviving the crafts and indulging it into menswear is what tempts me the most.
10) What is your favourite book?
I have been fond of Harry Potter series.
11) What advice would you give to someone starting out?
All I would want to say is, you may have to cross a lot of hurdles & you might get mad during the journey but only MAD’s get famous. Believe in your capability. After all you have known it the best.
Learn to take decisions yourself as it comprises of only Your happiness, sadness, gains and losses. Never regret as it’s never too late. The feeling of achieving it all alone is beautiful!
Many businesses fail just because entrepreneurs tend to go with the trend. They hardly realize their passion. So you don’t have to launch a business simply as everyone is doing it. Always do what you love to do. Success will follow.
There were many other promising businesses Runit could have possibly launched. But he wanted to go with his passion, which was fashion designing. At one point, he risked everything to realize his entrepreneurial goals. Now he emerged victorious!
