Entrepreneur: Sridevi Krishna
Business Name: Princess Couture
Welcome to Entrepreneurs of India #startupstories episode 129
Years ago, Sridevi oscillated between a 9 to 6 job and family. She wasn’t happy. She always yearned to do something of her own. The monotonous work at office was indeed boring. Working under someone was not her cup of tea. She had a flair for shopping and she turned it into a business.
Today, Sridevi is at the helm of Princess Couture, a complete social media-based e-commerce store for women. They sell a wide range of products, from designer wear to accessories.
As a brand, Princess Couture always stays in vogue. Within a short span of time, it became a prominent fashion e-tailer in the country. “We will come up with new designs every week which you can’t find even in shopping malls,” says Sridevi. What makes Princess Couture special? Let’s find out as Sridevi walks us through her entrepreneurial journey.
1) How did you get your idea for this business?
When I completed my B.E, I got married immediately and moved to Bangalore from my hometown (Visakhapatnam). When I concentrated on my career. The 9 to 6 job did not give me any satisfaction. My kid was just a year old when I was working then. It was very difficult to manage things. I left my kid at mom’s place for three year to manage my career.
However, things went worse when he was 4.5 years old. He cried a lot for me. Immediately, I took him to my place. I left my job. Later, when he started going to school I was alone at home.
Usually I love to do shopping. I was in pace with the new trends in the market. I started my research on manufacturers across India and thought about selling the products online. That’s how Princess Couture happened.
2) Why is “now” a good time for this idea to exist?
E-commerce is growing every year and people are researching more on new fashion trends. Nowadays, people don’t have time to go and check products in physical stores. People are ready to spend money, but they need quality products. Princess Couture meets all their requirements.
3) What was the reaction from your family when you first decided to become an entrepreneur?
My husband plays a vital role in marketing my business. He was really impressed when I wanted to start. My father always told me to do whatever made me happy. My mother helped and guided me on fabrics that looked cool and trendy. My sister also helped me a lot in my journey. My in-Laws are very supportive. So these people are the backbone of Princess Couture. I feel really fortunate to have them by my side.
4) What was your biggest mistake in business and what did you learn from it?
In the beginning, I only posted products on my Facebook page. I was not aware of Instagram. I started selling on Instagram too. Later, I associated with WhatsApp groups. Then people started recognizing Princess Couture.
5) What is your biggest obstacle in the next 12 months and how will you overcome it?
People are looking for change every day. We need to fulfill client requirement. It’s my first priority. Now we plan to focus on business growth and sales. I have to keep an eye on my monthly and annual sales.
6) What habits contribute to your success?
Patience and smart work. I think these two factors play a major role in business.
7) If you had the opportunity to start this business again what would you do differently?
I would have started my own website with new stock updates weekly so it could be easy to find my product details. And I would have launched my own production unit with own label.
8) What is your favourite inspirational quote?
Opportunities don’t happen. You create them.
9) Where do you find inspiration?
My father inspires me a lot. His first priority has always been family. He always wanted to give the best to his family. He used to tell us successful stories of people and kept the spark in us intact.
10) What is your favourite book?
My hectic schedule does not give me much time to read. I rarely read books. Whenever I have time, I read out stories to my kid.
11) What advice would you give to someone starting out?
Most startups spend a lot of time in designing products behind the closed doors. You can do whatever you want, but please do proper research on each and every thing. Don’t expect very quick results. It will take time to reach people so please be patient. And focus on things which you need to improve for your company’s growth. In business always quality matters, not quantity and trust speaks.
Ecommerce is booming in India. From food to lifestyle, every product category is turning online. As an entrepreneur, Sridevi identified this opportunity and launched Princess Couture. It was smart decision as it allowed flexibility for her business in terms of shipping and acquiring customers.
The crux of her business’ success was proper research. She studied the market and its different aspects before launching her business. So, always emphasis the research part before you plunge into the aggressively competitive world of business.
Apart from Princess Couture, Sridevi has expanded her domain into event management business. She has recently launched Yutsahin, her event management company based in Bangalore.
